Be Release Ready with Conditional Field Formatting | Winter '25:

Salesforce Conditional Field Formatting Winter 25 Release

The Challenge with Configuring Visual Indicators Today

Creating custom visual indicators to highlight key fields is a common requirement in Salesforce configuration. These indicators make it easy to understand the status of a record at a glance, eliminating the need to sift through lengthy details to get a clear picture of what’s going on. Internally, we leverage visual indicators in our Salesforce instances to provide quick visibility into Lead and Opportunity statuses, as well as the health of our epics.

Unfortunately, the process of configuring these visual indicators on a Lightning record page has historically been less than intuitive. Each visual indicator requires a separate custom formula field, as there hasn’t been a way to display the indicator directly on the field itself. Moreover, the images used for these indicators need to be manually sourced, uploaded, and often end up skewed in certain scenarios. Due to the complexity of configuring and managing these custom visual indicators, an Idea Exchange item for Conditional Field Formatting has garnered over 38,000 points.

But this is about to change with the Winter ’25 release! You’ll soon be able to configure custom visuals leveraging Salesforce’s standard Lightning Design System icons through a simple point-and-click wizard directly within the Lightning App Builder.

Let’s dive into how it works.

Enabling Conditional Field Formatting :Be Release Ready with Conditional Field Formatting

Imagine you want to add a custom visual indicator to emphasize a field that displays customer sentiment. Here’s how you’d do it with Winter '25’s new Be Release Ready with Conditional Field Formatting feature:

  1. Access the Lightning App Builder: Start by selecting the field you want to display the visual indicator on.

  2. Conditional Formatting: In the property panel on the right-hand side, you’ll see a new option for Conditional Formatting. This is where you’ll either choose an existing conditional formatting ruleset or create a new one.

  3. Create a Ruleset: When you click "Create Ruleset," a modal pops up allowing you to configure the first rule. You can select the icon and color to display, as well as define the conditions under which this indicator appears.

For instance, say you’re setting up a rule to display icons based on values in a "Customer Sentiment" field. You could conditionally show a green happy face if the sentiment is positive, or a red frown for negative sentiment. Additionally, conditions can be based on other data, like Title or Department for Contact records. You can configure multiple rules for the same field, displaying different icons for different field values.

The Power of Custom Visual Indicators at Runtime

Once the configuration is complete, it’s time to see it in action. In this example, a green happy face emoji appears next to our Customer Sentiment field in the highlights panel, exactly as configured. If the field value changes, the displayed icon and color will adjust accordingly.

Displaying these custom visual indicators makes it easier for end users to quickly identify the most relevant information, allowing them to do their jobs more efficiently.

Key Considerations

  • Conditional Field Formatting is only available for Dynamic Forms fields. If your org hasn’t yet migrated to Dynamic Forms, check out this Help doc to get started.

  • If you want these indicators to display on the Salesforce Mobile app, ensure you enable Dynamic Forms on Mobile from the Mobile App Settings in Setup.

Release Timeline

Conditional Field Formatting will roll out gradually, starting with pre-release orgs in early September 2024. Make sure your org is ready for Winter ’25 and start planning to enhance your record pages with this exciting new feature!
